With its dense urban fabric, congestion is one of the most transport significant challenges for Addis Ababa. Arup’s initiative with Ethiopian Railway Corporation has reframed Transit Oriented Development (TOD) within Addis Ababa. By integrating new developments with existing Light Rail Transit (LRT) stations, it aims to tackle congestion and improve the city. Our strategy for this supports existing communities and envisions convenient public transport for all.
Upgrading 11 LRT stations in total, the Addis Ababa Urban Renewal Initiative aimed to alleviate congestion across the city by integrating new developments into its existing public transit systems. As part of this, our team focused on implementing new rail infrastructure, land recycling, and urban improvements. This approach worked to upgrade Kebele neighbourhoods and informal settlements, while prioritising social sustainability. We also created a comprehensive toolkit by analysing key drivers, trends, and challenges. This toolkit helped to understand the city’s social and urban environment when progressing the project.
The LRT transformation balanced rapid urban growth with community needs. It enhanced mobility by providing efficient and affordable transportation, while connecting remote areas with central districts. Residents gained better access to jobs, education, and services, which all helped to improve their quality of life. The city’s congestion was also reduced by offering an alternative to road-based transport, providing a more convenient transport network for its residents.
